  • Profile

Dr Carla Meijen is an Assistant Professor in Organisational and Sport Psychology. My research focuses on performing under pressure in sport and the psychological determinants of endurance performance. That is, how can you approach a potentially stressful situation as a positive challenge?  As an applied sport psychology practitioner I also focus on how psychological strategies (such self-talk, if-then planning, goal-setting) can be made accessible to endurance participants, as well as researching how strategies are used to help enhance psychological factors such as motivation and self-efficacy.

Carla has published 27+ articles in journals such as Sports Medicine, The Sport Psychologist, International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Psychology of Sport and Exercise, Motivation and Emotion, Journal of Sports Sciences, Psychology in the Schools, and International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. She has edited the book Endurance Performance in Sport: Psychological Theory and Interventions and authored the book Empowered birth: Lessons from sport psychology for your maternity journey

Carla is a chartered sport and exercise psychologist with the British Psychological Society and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. She completed her PhD at Staffordshire University (UK), she has an MSc in Performance Psychology (University of Edinburgh), an MSc in Social Psychology (University of Amsterdam), and she is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
