Safe models for risky decisions
Helena Steingroever investigates how we decide between options that differ in their immediate and long-term consequences. To examine how people make risky decisions, she focuses on the Iowa gambling task (IGT), in which participants are told to repeatedly choose cards from four decks to optimise their long-term outcomes. She challenges the trustworthiness of conclusions typically obtained from fitting reinforcement-learning models to IGT data. The aim is to develop more reliable measures of risky decision making and a better understanding of the underlying psychological processes.
